Kenyan Tax Compliance Checklist for Growing SMEs
A practical routine for keeping tax obligations organised as your business grows.
Growth brings opportunity, but it also increases the volume and complexity of tax obligations. A simple compliance system helps management avoid rushed filings, unsupported figures and preventable penalties.
What to focus on
Start with a tax calendar covering corporation or income tax, VAT, PAYE, withholding tax and any sector-specific obligations. Assign responsibility for preparing, reviewing and submitting each return, and include internal deadlines before the statutory due dates.
Reconcile returns to the accounting records every month. VAT should agree to sales and purchase information, payroll deductions should agree to payroll reports, and withholding certificates should be tracked. Keep invoices, contracts, payment evidence and reconciliations in an orderly digital filing system.
Review the organisation’s tax position periodically instead of waiting for a KRA query. A tax health check can identify missing returns, ledger differences, unsupported claims and registration issues early enough for corrective action.
